Why Health and Safety ?

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 imposes duties on Employers, Employees, the Self-employed, Designers, Manufacturers and Installers for the safety of their workplaces and products. Breaches of the law can lead to civil or criminal liability punishable by fines or imprisonment or both.

Is health and safety costly ?

  • safetyNo. It is largely a matter of common sense and good working practices. In many cases the regulations allow you to do what is reasonably practicable. If you are an Employer, the law requires you to carry out a Risk Assessment of your workplace, operations and processes and identify the hazards. In deciding your response you can take costs into account. However there are other areas when you do not have discretion and you must comply with Legislation. In general Health and Safety can be either cost beneficial or self financing when set against the cost of lost productivity through illness or injury. The costs of litigation and compensation can also be extremely high. However any Employer with concern for Employees will not need convincing. Many Employers are now safety aware and many have joint accreditations for Safety, Environment and Quality. Such joint accreditations are a powerful statement of a firm’s attitude and commitment to customers.
